The Odat project started in 2017 with the goal of offering 100% open source and privacy focused alternatives to closed commercial information and communication technologies that have become essential in modern life.
We combine an assortment of well established open tools to provide an experience similar to what we are used to from large centralized companies.
Social and media technologies used by Odat work in a distributed or federated way. This means for example that you can share your social media, blog posts or videos on Odat and people from many different sites and severs using the same tools can interact with you.
You can install everything needed to recreate the Odat experience on your own server and be part of the Federation or “Fediverse” completely for free. That’s the beauty of open source code and copyleft licenses.
We respect your privacy and will not share or sell any personal information to third parties.
We also believe in an advertising free online experience. To compensate for providing a free service, the Odat website uses a small part of your devices spare processing power for funding. This generally uses less of your power then any regular video ad would and happens completely in the background. Once you close the Odat apps or browser tab it stops.
Paid accounts with more storage space are available and we also offer managed support and hosting if you wish to run your own server.
